Today I have been thinking about two different philosophies that I apply in my life.
The first is “Do It Now”. I completely realize that I am a procrastinator at heart. If I allow myself to push off a job once, it is even easier to push that same job off a second and third time. That last load of laundry that needs to be folded will end up sitting in the dryer for a week unless I force myself to do it now. That is the reason I developed the “Do It Now” strategy. Basically, I force myself to finish whatever project I’ve started (or need to start) - no matter how much I don’t want to do it.
Not only is this a great exercise in discipline, but it also means I get a lot more done. And trust me, if you saw the pile of clothing and items that need to get put up on eBay, you’d realize how much I need the “Do It Now” philosophy in my life. The only way “Do It Now” works, is if you are vigilant. You know exactly what you are *supposed* to be doing right now. Are you doing it? Or did you give yourself a pass to goof off for a bit? I am all for goofing off, but the problem is that I give myself too many passes. I want to relax and play. I don’t want to do the million and one things that are on my list for today. But if I don’t, tomorrow will be completely unbearable.
“Do It Now” also leads into my second philosophy - “You Don’t Get That Yet”. See, I figured out (while I was forcing myself to work!!) that I can dangle a carrot under my own nose. Do I want to sit down and watch TV? Well, I don’t get that yet. If I want to watch TV, then I need to do some of the items on my list. Do I want dessert? Well, I don’t get it until the dinner dishes are finished. Do I want to go play on Club Pogo? I don’t get that until my blog postings are done.
Hey… look at that… my blog posting is done. YEAH! Um… thanks for reading… I’m going to play on Club Pogo now. I earned it. Just one game… I promise.
See you later!! And remember… don’t give yourself everything you want, exactly when you want it. Learn discipline and self-denial. It makes you a stronger person, and makes you truly appreciate what you wanted when you finally get it. Um.. yeah… and sometimes throw all the structure right out the window and do exactly what you want. Give yourself permission to take a you day… just don’t make every day a you day.

I think “You Don’t Get That Yet” is the hardest to do… but also the most important. Keep working at it. I think it makes us all stronger to be able to deny ourselves sometimes. It makes us stop and really think about wants versus needs, and helps us become more responsible in our daily choices.
